How it works
BPM is beats per minute. The tool measures the gap between your taps and averages it, so a few taps gives a rough answer and eight or more gets close to exact. It ignores a tap that arrives after a long pause, which is what lets you start again without pressing reset.
If the number looks half or double what you expected, you are probably tapping the half-time or double-time pulse — both are correct readings of the same song. Trap written at 140 is often counted as 70.
